What are Photovoltaic Systems? PV

Photovoltaic (PV) systems or solar panel systems allow you to generate cheap, green electricity from sunlight.

Solar panels capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic cells and convert this free energy into electricity which you can use to power appliances in your house and for lighting.

Greentec specialize in supplying and installing PV systems and can help you decide if this is a viable technology for your electrical needs.

Benefits of Photovoltaic Systems

  • Save money on your electricity bill.
Sunlight is a free natural resource, so other than the initial installation costs, there are no ongoing fees, only savings.
  • Get paid for generating electricity.
The UK Feed-In Tariffs scheme pays you for generating electricity even if you use it yourself.
  • Sell electricity back to the grid.
Any surplus electricity you generate can be sold back to the grid for a profit.

How much does it cost?

The cost of PV systems can vary, but prices have come down considerably over the last couple of years. Generally the more electricity a system can generate and the more efficient it is, the greater the cost, but also the greater the savings and benefits.

Our systems range in price depending on the products used, as we're not tied to one supplier/manufacturer, the number of panels, ease of installation, etc.

Typically, prices start from £3000 - £4500 for a small 6 panel 1.5kWp system, rising to £7500 - £11000 for a larger 16 panel 4kWp system.

Our systems will generally pay for themselves within 7 to 10 years.

How much will I save?

A 4kWp system should be able to generate around 3,700 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, which is roughly what a typical household will consume over the same period.

Assuming the system is eligible for the UK Feed-In Tarifff scheme (FITs), savings and income of £750 per year are realistic.

If you know the basic details of the system you want then you can use our solar savings calculator for a more accurate estimate of your costs/savings.

When applying for FITs you will need to show evidence of your property's Energy Performance Certificate which can affect which tariff you get. We supply EPCs with all Solar PV systems. Most houses automatically qualify for the higher rate. If yours doesn't, Greentec can combine technologies to improve your EPC and get you the higher rate.

When you choose Greentec, our experts will advise on the best systems for you to ensure that you do qualify for FITs and we handle the application for you too.

How do PV systems work?

PV cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material such as silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced. Modern panels are efficient enough to produce electricity even on a cloudy day.

The output of a PV system is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp) which is a measure of the output power it can achieve under full solar radiation in standard conditions. Solar radiation of 1kW per square meter is used to define standard conditions.

Since it is based on measurements under optimum conditions, the peak power is not the same as the power under actual radiation conditions. In practice, this will be approximately 15-20% lower due to the considerable heating of the solar cells.

PV System Components

Our PV systems usually consists of 3/4 basic components.

  1. The PV Array
Electricity is generated by solar cells, which are grouped together into solar panels. These solar panels are then grouped into a PV array.
  2. Inverter
The inverter is responsible for safely and efficiently converting the direct current output (DC power) from the PV array, in to an alternating current (AC power) output which is necessary to be connected to the National Grid.
  3. Utility Meter
The utility meter measures how much power you are using and how much you are feeding back into the National Grid.
  4. Performance Monitoring (Optional)
We can supply various forms of meters to monitor the performance of your system. These range from simple displays to systems offering web-based data monitoring of your PV installation.
