Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps allow you to heat your home with energy absorbed from the outside air.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in a similar way to a fridge extracting heat from it's inside. They operate even when the external temperature is as low as -15°C.

There are generally two types of air source heat pump systems:

  • Air-to-water systems
    These distribute heat via your central heating system. They work more efficiently at lower temperatures than standard boiler systems, and are most suited to under floor heating systems or very large radiators.

  • Air-to-air systems
    These produce warm air which is circulated throughout your home by large fans. These systems do not provide hot water.

Benefits of Air-to-Air Systems

  • Save money on your fuel bill.
    The greatest savings are for people replacing conventional electrical heating, storage heaters, oil heaters, coal, etc.
  • Climate control.
    Air-to-air systems can provide cool dehumidified air as well as warm.
  • Cleans and purifies your home.
    Good for asthmatics or people with breathing problems. Removes tobacco odour and other unwanted smells.
  • A++ energy rating.
    Air-to-air systems will improve your EPC Grade. This is important if you want to produce your own electricity via Solar PV, as a poor EPC Grade drastically reduces your Feed-In Tariff payments.

So what's the catch?

  • Not covered by RHI.
    Air-to-Air systems are not covered by RHI, so you will not receive payments for switching to air-to-air despite it being a renewable technology.

Are air-to-air heat pumps still viable without RHI?

For lots of households, the answer to this is a resounding yes, but it really does depend on your circumstances.

Some Typical Scenarios

Supply and installation of a "whole-house" system will typically be between £3,000 to £11,000.

Because air-to-air is very efficient, it will have lower running costs than your current heating system, and will therefore save you money on your heating costs.

The amount of savings depend on what system you currently use. For air-to-air to be viable, the savings must be greater than the installation costs.

  • Storage Heaters

    For an air-to-air system, replacing storage heaters in a typical 3 bed house, savings on electricity should be between £400 to £800 per year, making air-to-air a viable move that could pay for itself in as little as 5 years. The systems have a life expectancy of over 25 years, so you benefit for a further 20 years plus.

  • Gas Central Heating

    For an air-to-air system, replacing radiators in a typical 3 bed house, savings would not be as great. You will still be using gas to heat your hot water and so won't lose your gas bill altogether, and in this circumstance we would not recommend installing air-to-air on it's own. The savings just won't warrant the change.

  • Gas Central Heating with Solar PV

    If you already have Solar PV or are considering it along side air-to-air, the economics and therefore argument for replacing Gas Central Heating with air-to-air changes.

    Because you are/will be generating your own electricity, the cost of running the air-to-air system is nothing, which is a big saving over the heating share of your gas bill.

    Also, by installing Solar PV, you will get payments for the next 20 years from the Feed-In Tariff scheme, which will more than cover the installation costs of both systems. This is why Greentec recommend our holistic approach to renewable energy.

  • Oil or LPG

    For an air-to-air system, replacing oil in a typical 3 bed house, savings on fuel should be over £1,000 per year, making air-to-air a viable move that could pay for itself in as little as 3 years.

    This is a no-brainer even without Solar PV, however there is a huge argument for looking at the holistic approach, possibly also including solar thermal or themodynamic hot water to become totally self sufficient.
